May Day in Nelson
No one knows the true origin of the celebration of May Day. Some say it is as old as time itself. What we in Nelson and Munsonville know is that May Day is a day of casting off the cares of winter, and to enjoy the beautiful New England spring.
We come together on the Town Common, some to dance and others to visit with those we may have not seen since the first snowflake fell. The children are delighted with the bright colors of the May Pole ribbons, waiting their turn to help weave the ribbons when it’s time for the May Pole Dance. But first, we are treated to the trumpet sounding of Jack In the Green as he heralds the arrival of another beautiful Spring in Nelson.
The Jack In the Green Morris Men and the Harrisville Morris Women will be dancing. This old tradition from the British Isles has in recent decades been comfortably adapted on this side of the pond.
As for the May Pole with its tip top decorated with beautiful forsythia from local residents and bestrewn with colorful ribbons, this too, has regained favor in more recent memory.
The Nelson May Pole is set up in the middle of the Nelson Town Common under the watchful eyes of Dave and Heather Bower. After the Morris dancing, the children gather to pick up the ribbons and wind their way around the pole, creating a rainbow of fascinating twists.
Twist and turn and under and over.
Weave your ribbon as you weave your wishes and dreams.
Perhaps, when the music stops, you will find a number under your feet.
If your number matches the one called, you win one of the many delicious cakes that have been prepared for the annual Cake Walk.
What a treat to take home and devour!

I would like to share this info with my Nelson neighbors. Over the years, I have taken care of Nelson children who were referred to me by the Nelson school. Because of this, I have been awarded 2nd place, nationally, for the National Daughters of the American Revolution Community Service Award. (My Revolutionary ancester, John Farwell, is buried in the Nelson cemetery!)
I think the idea of having a party while I am still alive is a GREAT IDEA! So many receptions, etc. don't occur until after a funeral!

The Monadnock Folklore Society presents the Nelson Second Saturday Contra Dance on May 12th, featuring Nils Fredland calling with Jane and Neil Orzechowski.
Nils Fredland has been making music, leading dances, and bringing people together for 20 years as a teacher; singer; instrumentalist; contra, square, and community dance leader; and workshop leader. He shares his skill, charisma, grace and goofiness with contra dancers coast to coast every weekend. He is known for his technical skill, disarming friendliness, comfortable stage presence, and soothing voice.
In honor of Mother’s Day, Jane Orzechowski will be playing fiddle accompanied by her son Neil on piano. Jane Orzechowski was part of the delegation representing New Hampshire at the 1999 Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington, DC. Neil studied piano with Bob McQuillen who in 2003, received a National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, our nation's highest honor for a traditional artist. Bob has made it his mission to teach young musicians to follow in his footsteps in preserving contra dance music in New Hampshire, and Neil is a shining example.
Dancing begins at 8:00 PM, with a short workshop beforehand. Beginners and singles are welcome and all dances are taught throughout the evening. Admission is $8 or $6 for students and seniors. The dance takes place in the historic Town Hall in Nelson.
For more information call 603.762.0235 or visit www.monadnockfolk.org. The Monadnock Folklore Society has presented contra dances and concerts of traditional music since 1982.

Troy MacGillivray returns to the Nelson Town Hall on Sunday, May 13 for a 7:00 PM show. Admission is $15/$12 (Sr/Jr/Advance). On this visit Troy will be accompanied by Kimberley Fraser, a master at the trio of fiddling, step dancing and piano.
Tickets available online from the Monadnock Folklore Society
Troy MacGillivray was raised in Lanark, Nova Scotia; his musical prowess can be attributed to an especially rare combination of commitment and bloodline. By the age of six, Troy was already impressing audiences with his step dancing skills. By 13 he was teaching piano at the renowned Gaelic College of Celtic Arts and Crafts in St. Anne’s, Cape Breton. He has completed grade seven of the Toronto Conservatory of Music for classical piano, has spent four years in a stringed orchestra and has earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in music from St. Francis Xavier University.
Whether playing piano or fiddle, or showcasing his step-dancing capabilities, Troy MacGillivray displays a unique sense of pride and commitment to his Celtic heritage and his music continues to add to the history and development of the traditional music that is the epitome of the Maritimes, the place he calls home!
Kimberley Fraser was born on Cape Breton Island, and nurtured within its rich musical heritage. She first began to impress audiences at the age of three with her step-dancing talents. Soon after that she took up both the fiddle and the piano. Though still in her 20s, Kimberley’s already has a distinguished career. She has traveled the world, from Victoria to Afghanistan, performing at venues such as The Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. bringing Cape Breton music with her wherever she goes. Dan MacDonald of the Cape Breton Post says about Fraser’s versatility, “She has matured to become one of the stellar players of the Cape Breton fiddle tradition, equally at home at a house party, playing for a square dance or on stage for a concert in Bras d’Or or Boston, Scotsville or Scotland.” Kimberley has shared the stage with the finest acts in Celtic music, such as Alasdair Fraser, Martin Hayes and Lunasa. Kimberley is also in demand for her piano skills, accompanying musicians at home and abroad.
Please join us for an exhilarating evening of traditional music presented by some of the best young talent around!

Our congregation comes together at the Chapel by the Lake to worship God every Sunday morning at 10:00. The goal of our worship is to help the worshiper to make a connection between God's Holy Spirit and our human spirit. To help this happen for as many as possible, we seek to create a comfortable atmosphere for each person to participate in singing, praying, sharing concerns & joys, and hearing God's message as it is taught from the Bible.
Our worship leader seeks to communicate God's Word each week in a personal and understandable way so that you can more actively incorporate God's guidance into your daily life.

Olivia Rodham Memorial Library
Description:
She was the world's biggest-ever ship. A luxurious miracle of twentieth-century technology, the Titantic was equipped with the most ingenious safety devices of the time. Yet on a moonlit night in 1912, the "unsinkable" Titantic raced across the glassy Atlantic on her maiden voyage, with only twenty lifeboats for 2,207 passengers. "A Night To Remember", Walter Lord's 1955 classic novel, is the gut-wrenching, minute-by minute account of her fatal collision with an iceberg and how the resulting tragedy brought out the best and worst in human nature. Some gave their lives for others, some fought like animals for survival.
The Library Book Discussion Group meets on May 21st at 10:00 am. "A Night to Remember" may be borrowed from the Library.
